The Hawaii-inspired design of the Joint Traffic Management Center building in Honolulu
“The Department of Transportation Services City and County of Honolulu selected AHL to design the Joint Traffic Management Center (JTMC) located adjacent to the Hawai‘i Capitol District. JTMC supports multi-agency coordination and joint operations to improve traffic management on Oahu. The Center facilitates coordination among city and state departments including the Honolulu Police Department and Honolulu Fire Department Emergency Medical Services, Ocean Safety, Department of Facilities Management, and the Department of Transportation Services. A high-tech office building with heightened security, the design is compatible with the architectural character of existing buildings in the Capitol District and maintains a ‘park-like environment’ with a public art plaza.” – AHL
“The architectural design of the JTMC building was inspired and informed by the traditions of Pacific voyaging and navigation. The overall theme of the structure honors and recognizes the successful revival and perpetuation of Polynesian and Hawaiian voyaging and the lessons learned from Micronesian Master Navigator Mau Piailug.” – honolulu.gov
