Honolulu Skyline Rail Stations
Oahu’s expanding Skyline rail system brings four new stations and transit access to central Honolulu
Segment 2 of Honolulu’s Skyline rail system introduced four new stations extending service further into the urban core of Honolulu, marking a major milestone in the city’s growing elevated transit network. The expansion includes Makalapa (Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam), Lelepaua (Daniel K. Inouye International Airport), Ahua (Lagoon Drive), and Kahuauiki (Kalihi Transit Center) stations, improving connectivity across Oahu while creating new transportation hubs designed to serve thousands of daily riders.
Developed through a collaboration of public agencies including the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) and the City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, the stations combine durable infrastructure with contemporary architectural elements designed for long-term public use in Hawaii’s coastal climate.
GKD Metal Fabrics commissioned the architectural photography to document the custom stainless steel metal mesh systems integrated throughout the station platforms. The mesh railings provide both security and visual transparency, allowing open views through the elevated structures while maintaining safety for passengers moving through the transit system.
The photography focused on highlighting the scale of the stations, the rhythm and texture of the metal mesh panels, and the way the material interacts with Honolulu’s strong daylight and urban surroundings. These images capture how the architectural detailing contributes to the overall identity and functionality of the Skyline transit experience.
