HFS Federal Credit Union Hilo

A purpose-built workplace supporting the teams behind a trusted Hawaii Island financial institution

Located in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, the HFS Federal Credit Union Administration Building was designed to support the internal teams that power one of the island’s most trusted community financial institutions.

The building itself was designed by Ed English Architecture, while District Architects led the interior architecture and workplace design, creating a flexible office environment that reflects the organization’s mission while supporting the evolving needs of its staff. The project was constructed by NewGround in close collaboration with the design team.

The design concept draws inspiration from the natural landscapes of Hawaii Island, with environmental graphics developed by A&E + SMA Design referencing ecosystems ranging from reef and rainforest to volcanic terrain. These visual elements—along with references to the iconic ‘i’iwi bird—create a biophilic design language that connects the workplace to the surrounding environment and local culture.

Workstations, meeting rooms, quiet spaces, and collaborative lounges were carefully planned to support a variety of work styles. Furniture by Systemcenter help translate the architectural vision into a cohesive workplace environment, balancing ergonomic performance with warm material finishes and clean modern lines.

Architectural photography for the project focused on documenting the workplace design, custom graphics, and the variety of collaborative and restorative spaces that support the daily work of HFS staff serving communities across Hawaii Island.
